This project started as a series of piano miniatures entitled ‘Paris Sketches’ - sound pictures of places in Paris that resonated with Louis. In April 2022 Louis was diagnosed with Lymphoma, inducing a fever dream state in which he became more of a detached observer/listener to what he was playing on the piano. Determined to try and capture this he took to the Kino Teatr for a few days of recording, stating that he ‘remembered little of the process of composing’ but could sense that the music unfolding was a response to the events in the World around him. An example of this can be heard in ‘To the Border’ where wild arpeggios interrupt the main theme of the track which made him wonder if this was an expression of the shocking violence that was being inflicted on Ukraine'. These compositions - all a reflection of what Louis was going through at the time from joy to regret make up the rest of the album - a project that, for Louis, became ‘something to live for’.
