The Regents Canal - A New Dawn
2022
I was brought up on a boat on the Lancaster Canal so, as we emerged from Lockdown, I was drawn to the light, the reflections and the beauty of the Regents Canal just down the road from where I live in Camden. I felt the distinctive design and architecture of the bridges, locks and barges in my bones and, in a sense, it was like a return to my childhood. This ribbon of nature through north London - as it wends its way from the Victorian mansions of Little Venice, through the repurposed warehouses of Camden, Kings Cross and Islington, through Hackney to Mile End and Limehouse - was a way for me to reconnect with the world after the isolation of the previous year and a half. The beauty and light of these explorations moved me deeply and that is what I have endeavoured to capture in these paintings.

“Those four rides in 100 days have affected me profoundly. The only way I could think of that would convey that sense of wonder was to attempt to paint it – to capture the deserted streets, the sound of nothing but birdsong, the freshness of the air, the sense that nature had been given a chance to thrive.”
